Opening of 2015 Guildhall Jazz Festival: Ellington's Second Sacred Concert
Saturday March 21 2015
1 Milton Street
London, UK EC2Y 9BH
The Guildhall Jazz Choir and Ensemble will present Duke Ellington's Second Sacred Concert in the opening Festival concert on Saturday 21 March at 7.30 PM. Premiered at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York 1968, it was created as a response to the success of the hugely popular First Concert, and contains some of Ellington's best music. Stroman has streamlined and rearranged it into a new 40-minute Suite from the Second Sacred Concert, vastly increasing the contribution from the singers and rebalancing the work by reducing the jazz orchestra to a large ensemble.
The Guildhall Jazz Singers, the School's select close-harmony singing group, presents its unique take on jazz standards in the first half, directed by Flora Medlicott.
